For $400 a Tesla car owner has had a microchip put in his hand. The device will unlock his Tesla vehicle. Vivokey Apex which utilizes the same application that is used by iPhones, are testing the chips on around 100 people before general release – so reports the NY Post and various other media outlets.


For years believers have been warning of a mark that could be implanted under the skin – holding identification data, medical records, criminal records etc. These include Evangelist Barry Smith (one of the first to determine this), Apostle Donna Taggart, Dr David Jeremiah, Rabbi Jonathan Cahn etc.

Around this time last year I wrote a feature regarding Sweden, who had started branding their citizens in 2018 with a human microchip…en masse. The Daily Mail reported an alarming increase. In fact as of 2020 over 6,000 Swedes had received the device, embedded in their hands.

Brandon Dalaly appears to be excited about the fact that he will no longer need to worry about his car keys going astray! Apparently Vivokey Apex has enabled this due to the fact that they have an entire App Store to enable or use within the embedded human chip industry that customers can choose to have installed.

Elon Musk’s Tesla Company is providing this ‘option’ for all their clients and as the NY Post states.

“Tesla owners who do not want to implant themselves with chips can use a keycard or a mobile app to unlock their vehicles.”


The recipient Dalaly has disclosed that he already has another smaller chip on his left hand that holds the details to his covid vaccine details, his identification and the keys to his house. Similar to micro-chipping a canine, the device can hold a multitude of data which has some people questioning the reason and privacy concerns.

What other information could be stored? How and why could it be used?


Some believers look at this through the Bible which states clearly in Revelation 13,

“And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.”

Whether you are a believer or not, it is a time to question what you really do believe. The economy is crashing daily – globally, the spirit of lawlessness is all around, disorder and discord consumes man and he Governments give no hope.

Jesus told this to his disciples over 2000 years. It is applicable today as it was then,

“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid..” John 14:27

As Ukraine reels from the onslaught of invasion and war, simultaneously in recent weeks the world has become the spectator in Canada’s new war -the truck war. The heroic efforts of the truckers taking a stand for civil liberties and for what it right, has moved the world. No matter what leaders or the media report, our eyes are focused more at home and the bread and butter issues.

The inept ‘response’ of Justin Trudeau and how he has ‘dealt’ with the crisis has made a mockery of the term leader. We can only hope that freedom will win out in the end.

And here is the lesson – we may all live in uncertain times, but that does not mean that we need to doubt or be uncertain.

As the freedom fighters stand their ground in the wake of adversity, having their bank accounts frozen and living under the threat of having their pets euthanized, they stand strong in the front line, quoting Jesus’ words:

‘Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.’

Then they are trampled by police horses and arrested. The result is the same as it was for Jesus thousands of years before – support for their cause only grows hour-by-hour.

The bible teaches us that ‘we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers and the rulers of the darkness of this world.’ (Ephesians 6).

However, it is not only Canada where the fight for freedom grows. A few weeks ago in Finland, a lawyer and MP called Paivi Rasanen faces a courtroom and possibly two years in prison because of a tweet expressing her Christian viewpoint. Finland’s state prosecutor, stating that the word ‘sin’ could be harmful and compared the Holy Bible to Hitler’s Mein Kampf. So what is really going on…


In June 2020 the 50th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) occurred. Businesses, banks, high profile political figures convened at the whim of HRH Prince Charles of UK. The theme was the rebuilding of society following the Covid-19 pandemic. However, in recent weeks since the war in Ukraine – Covid is old news. According to leaders media outlets the entire global reset vision was ‘inspired’ by American far-right groups and therefore initiated the passion for the reset by President Joe Biden, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and interestingly, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. All three have since adopted/added the term, ‘reset’ in their nomenclature, the primary one is ‘New World Order.’

Since December 2021 the Dutch Government has demonstrated a great interest in the reset, in fact the Netherlands has been called to lead in the implementing the Great Reset – these documents were officially made available by the Dutch Government. (Santander, 2020)

Therefore, while everyone has been busy testing for Covid-19 and the buzz that surrounds it, watching update on Ukraine and the horrors it brings, it would appear that the nations of this world have been trying to manipulate the economy. We only have to look to Canada again, where emergency powers have enabled a few hundred people to freeze the bank accounts of not only the ‘protestors’ in Canada but their supporters. In addition Canada’s smooth talking Deputy Prime Minister Freeland also warned that the truckers would have their auto insurance canceled. Single moms donating $50 for what they believe is a good cause, having their funds also frozen – diabolical, (cbc, 2022). Yet these same nations of the ‘Free World’ are the first to point the finger at other nations – is there really that big a difference?

However, as we observe leader’s harmful attempts to corner and muzzle another man’s freedom of choice, there is one thing that they should remember:

Freedom was God’s first gift to man, and it is an unbreakable axiom that will always win in the end…

Nations in Chaos

Up-and-down the UK airports are in chaos on Friday 23rd Sept, as e-gates go down. Passengers stranded in planes as the technical issue left all e-gates across the United Kingdom offline. Due to safety issues planes cannot depart because there are too many passengers in the terminal!

The reason – a mystery. No-one can determine what caused this ‘failure’, but airports including Heathrow, Manchester and Edinburgh were affected. As if people haven’t had enough to contend with during 2020/21 with lockdowns, business and job losses and to top it all a threatening supply shortage of essentials like food, construction etc. the only things that there doesn’t seem to be a shortage of are facemasks and the Covid vaccines.

Today’s congestion had a knock-on effect at rail ports as well. Frustration is pouring over now as passengers are understandably feeling the frustration of a different type of lockdown. Restless toddlers and business persons missing important meetings. Many asserted that there was no ventilation at T5 Heathrow transit tunnel – unacceptable, right? Well, apparently not. It seems that more and more demands are being made upon the British public under duress. There doesn’t seem to be an adequate plan to deal with this and thousands of people have to just accept substandard standards.

Everything right now seems to be breaking down…


2020 and the world descends into lockdown. Nation-after-nation. Never-before-seen or experienced by recent generations, the word ‘lockdown’ takes on a whole new meaning and agenda. Suggestions by leaders of mask-wearing, cleaning hands, wearing gloves starts to become common-place. Follow the science. The vaccine race is on…in record time a new vaccine appears, within a couple of months another, then another. Safe? The good outweighs any risks we are told, so queues appear again. People diligently getting their vaccines. ‘The country will be open for business again by April,’ PM Johnson tells the UK nation, you can book your holidays for the summer! Lists of banned countries appear, people are stranded abroad as their country is added to the endless list of banned countries. Travel chaos descends into an extended lockdown again.

Australia begins to open up for business again and just as she does the Delta version of the virus appears. Lockdown is administered again by Australia (their seventh). Compulsory vaccinations are declared but construction workers object to this – it appears the government wants to control one’s personal freedom of choice and managing your health. Construction workers in Melbourne decide to oppose this decision. However, there are more than construction workers objecting.

The Freedom Rally grows and freeways are shutdown.

Frustration gives way to anger and the crowds and the police decide to use pepper balls, smoke bombs and stinger grenades (rubber pellets). So what is the conclusion? You are not ‘allowed’ to protest now? Protesting is one of the free-world’s most basic rights. Freedom of speech, freedom of expression. But there is very little freedom. If there are any problems at a rally, it is classed now as ‘having been infiltrated or taken-over by far-right groups, neo-Nazis and/or anti-vaccination groups.

But here is the thing anti-vaccine protests have been going on all over the planet. The news reporting of this seems to be squashed.


In 1970 Henry Kissinger stated this:

“Control oil and you control nations; control food and you control the people.”

This strategy would appear to be in play today. It has just been announced in the UK overnight that you can only put 30 GBP into of gas into your car. We have all been warned that there will be ‘shortages’ of ‘certain items’ at Costco in the US this morning. Kamala Harris VP of USA warned in her trip last month to Asia that there would be shortages at Christmas so order soon! What on earth is wrong with these people. There appears to be a global conspiracy – but it is seems to me it’s the Governments that are manufacturing those conspiracies…

END TIMES: The Signs?

I recall when I first wrote this blog piece in Dec 2019, everyone was predicting a wonderous time in 2020. Remember the 20/20 vision analogy? I decided to repost this today as we are going through some tumultuous times. More than ever we need Jesus. PLEASE NOTE THIS WAS WRITTEN PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC.

Weather anomalies, catastrophic fires, plagues of locusts and rumors of war in Middle East dominate headlines!

END TIMES – 2020?

We are only a few days into a new year and new decade and it would appear that biblical signs of the End Times are beginning to manifest. Incredibly in the first week of 2020 great tension has erupted in the Middle East involving Iran, also known in the bible as Persia/Elam. Ezekiel 38 specifically mentions Persia is an ally of Magog (Russia). Within the last week it has been revealed, through all major news outlets, that Iran has been having meetings with Russia! 

In Australia catastrophic wild fires have driven people onto the beaches. 20 people have died, 530 million animals have perished and 1500 homes destroyed. Major evacuations are underway. In addition, the largest plague of locust in a quarter of a century has just hit Africa and the Middle East bringing a new humanitarian disaster for Kenya, Ethiopia and beyond.

END TIMES – Reading the signs?

For years man has been debating what will happen when the End Times begin. What will the signs be and in what order? For some reason, we (collectively speaking of course), tend to focus on this at the beginning of a New Year. Perhaps our expectations are already high and we anticipate the second coming of Jesus all the more. Or maybe it’s because we are at the beginning of something new. Whatever the reason, it’s probably true to state that every believer probably asks themselves the same question – ‘will it be this year?’

Reality check! Over the years many have predicted when Jesus will return. However, in the scriptures, Jesus tells us that no man, nor the angels and not even the Son knows the exact time – only God does. Jesus also understood that man has a terrible record when it comes to reading the signs of the times. Matthew 16:2 & 3,

He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’; and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. (NKJ)

END TIMES – When is the time?

There is a lot written about the End Times, by great scholars like Paul McGuire with prophetic insight that shed light upon the scriptures. They help us to see what is really going on, give us direction – they help us prepare and watch for Jesus, and we thank God for them.  Unfortunately, there are just as many, if not more books written that do nothing but leave one in a state of confusion!

However, the Bible is 100 percent accurate – and you can take that to the bank! I truly believe if you pray and ask God for wisdom and discernment concerning this realm, you will receive it.

What we do know is this – in Matthew 24 the disciples privately asked Jesus about the End Times. Jesus had just exited the temple and everyone had just made their way up to the Mount of Olives. The disciples approached Jesus and asked,

“Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

Jesus answered them,

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.  Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.  All these are the beginning of birth pains…”

Therefore, not only are there great physical signs on the earth but there are cosmic signs in the sky and man’s morality is at an all-time low, with Jesus comparing man’s self-destruction to the times of Noah.

END TIMES – The Good News

2020 is a great number. The number 20 in the Bible symbolizes the cycles of completeness. It is often connected to a perfect period of waiting, labor or suffering that is compared to a trial and then a reward.

The reward is generous and full of God’s love. For instance, Jacob waited 20 years for his wives and to be released from his father-in-law. Canaan King Jabin oppressed the people of Israel for 20 years until Deborah and Barak released them from trouble. God told Abraham if he found 20 righteous men he wouldn’t destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. (source: Biblical Numerology).

Therefore, 2020 is multiplied – a lot! While the world goes through transition, we can all take hope in Jesus’ words…

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matt 28:20

Man’s ‘Justice’ vs God’s Judgement

As the pre-trials of the 9/11 plotters gets underway can man measure the kind of justice required?

The Law is constantly changing, being modified – sentences lengthened, shortened. In some parts of our nation one can rob a store and as long as you don’t go ‘over budget’ – $900 – one will not face prosecution. The same state has now suggested that if a criminal is paid ‘prior to committing a crime’ that this will somehow deter or de-motivate him/her to kill.

This seems unbelievably wacky to you and I – and here is the truth – IT IS. However, one has to be more concerned as to who is actually making these suggestions and who is going to carry them out? Is someone going to stand at the ‘Steal Check-out’ and ring out $900 worth of goods???

Man is definitely losing his way – all on his own. Today the pre-trials of the 9/11 plotters got underway, 20 years after the atrocities that shook the world. For the last 20 years these terrorists have sat in a prison with all the latest facilities, had three meals a day, been allowed privileges and free medical treatment. In comparison a lot of veterans who have fought against such like, are homeless and living on the streets.

Therefore, it is not surprising that we find ourselves asking the question can justice be served by man. Can a judge, who has just 2 years experience, really preside over such important proceedings. Considering almost 3,000 plus family members of those who perished are still waiting to see justice done.

What is Justice?

By definition justice means the following:

  • The process or result of using laws to fairly judge and punish crimes and criminals
  • The maintenance or administration of what is just especially by the impartial adjustment of conflicting claims or the assignment of merited rewards or punishments
  • The quality of being just, impartial or fair
  • Conformity to this principle or ideal: RIGHTEOUSNESS
  • The quality of conforming to law
  • Conforming to truth, fact, or reason: CORRECTNESS

Therefore, it is safe to assume that when meeting out justice, one has to do the right thing. As the trials have been dragged out, so it is safe to assume have the pain of the loved ones left behind from 9/11. One has to ask the question, does man really know what he is doing? Does he know what justice is? Does he know how to apply justice?

God’s Judgement

One thing is for sure, while man fudges and slurs his way through a trough of legal jargon, we know what is right and what is wrong – right? The families need a verdict – NOW!

God’s judgement is something that has no delay attached to it and is something that no man will escape, 2 Corinthians 5:10:

 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”

The definition of judgement is in itself interesting:

  • The capacity of judging: DISCERNMENT
  • A formal utterance of an authoritative opinion
  • A formal decision given by a court
  • The final judging of humankind by God
  • A divine sentence or decision

God has judged this world and it’s inhabitants before. Prior to the flood he gave instructions to Noah to build an ark. All of the animals on earth were saved but only 8 humans were saved – Noah and his family. Sodom and Gomorrah also fell under God’s judgement. These are very dramatic and noted instances there are many more but God is the ultimate judge.

He is the discerner of the man’s hearts, John 2:23-25

“But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.”

Therefore we can rest in the fact that God knows all things, compares all things and discerns all things. His judgement is final and fair.

His justice supreme.

As the thousands of names of all those who perished on 9/11 are called out, our prayers, thoughts and love go out to all those immediate family members left behind.

We all remember what we were doing that day.

The day time stood still.

I was living in a small little village in Northern Ireland at the time when I got a phone call from a friend. She asked me if I was watching TV and if not to turn it on. As I did the second plane hit the second tower. Like millions of others across the world, I couldn’t believe what I was witnessing. It was surreal and horrifying all at the same time. The people in the planes, those in the towers, those running though the streets engulfed by clouds of debris – the shear horror of it all.

In those few hours, fear took over the world – but it was only for a moment…

Never Forgotten

The strength of God and the resilience of man immediately shone through – but at a heavy price. Hundreds of first responders – who ran towards thousands of perishing lives – lost their own. You cannot train people to do this – they are born to do this.

The passengers in the hijacked planes frantically made calls home to loved ones – leaving heart-rendering, last messages of love.

Good, decent people whose lives were stolen, must never be forgotten.

In the days that followed the President of the United States, George W. Bush had the unenviable task of trying to bring not only America together but the world. His words of encouragement and boldness to those at Ground Zero has become one of the most iconic moments of hope. It lifted us all.

Hands on Heart

As we stand for all of those, in a moment of silence, 20 years on, we must also remember that the death toll continues to rise from the aftermath of 9/11. Tens of thousands of first responders who worked at Ground Zero, the Pentagon and Shanksville, continue to feel the effects of that day. The toxic environments has claimed the lives of these gallant men and women, who gave no thought to themselves. Their health deteriorating daily, every moment continues to be a fight.

Today we remember.

Our hands on our hearts – always.

And we recall the words from the Holy Bible,

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. 2 Corinthians 4:8 & 9

What On Earth Is Going On?

Are we living in the last days?

We are surrounded by dramatic, deadly climatic events that are happening more and more frequently throughout the earth. To say that something odd is happening is quite frankly an understatement. People are asking themselves, ‘what on earth is going on?’ Whether (no pun intended) it is unseasonable weather systems, solar and lunar eclipses or Blood Moons, and pestilences (pandemics), they are definitely catching the eye of the amateur and the professional.  For instance, on July 2018, Sky News reported a series of dramatic weather anomalies all hitting the planet on the same day. This could be true for this last week that has seen some horrendous and strange weather anomalies hit the south and NYC. However, man is putting this all down to ‘climate change’.

California has again been experiencing ‘Apocalyptic fires.’ People who live were there, feel this is something different, something more than just mere ‘anomalies’. In some parts of the world, many are declaring they have been abandoned by the authorities and left to ‘God’s mercy.’

The UK has again seen temperatures soar to record levels this year. We are indeed experiencing ‘signs and wonders’ in the heavens and on the earth.

In the USA there has been unusual activity as well. I live in the south and we normally tend to brace ourselves for storms and such like. However, this week hurricane IDA has left an unprecedented trail of destruction, right up and through NYC. It will take years to rebuild but this is nothing to the precious lives that have been lost.

So, why is all of this important and does it relate to the Last Days foretold in the Bible? Ok so let’s examine this further.  The weather extremes hit the nations, not only are humans being effected but the entire animal kingdom is also being hit. You will not hear this reported in the mainstream media outlets but if you search out the print/online media there are some incredible things happening out there.

So does the Bible have anything to say about these strange happenings? YES. In Hosea 4 we read the following:-

“Therefore shall the land mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea also shall be taken away.”

Dr Beshore was a former president of the World Bible Society. He had made some earth-shattering predictions prior to his death in 2016:

  • Beginning of the world’s end would be triggered in 2021
  • The Second Coming of Christ would be 2028 following 7 years of tribulation
  • He also, like others believed that WWI & II alongside the founding of the State of Israel were biblical signs
  • These events would be marked by asteroid hits, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and giant tsunamis.

However, for non-believers or sceptics one could argue that these are natural phenomena, brought on by climate change. But is we delve deeper into the Bible we can see that these prophecies are not new. The scribes and prophets thousands of years ago talked of a period in time when these catastrophic events would take place. It did not give a time but instead talked about a certain generation.

What the Bible says…

In the Bible both the Old and New Testaments mention ‘The great and terrible Day of the Lord’ (Joel 2:31 and cited in Acts 2:20). The term in the Hebrew Bible refers to temporal events – the invasion of a foreign army. Isaiah writes of it as does Malachi. In fact the latter foretells the return of Elijah immediately preceding ‘the great and terrible day of the LORD.’ Malachi’s prophecy is read in synagogues on the Great Sabbath immediately preceding Passover.

In the New Testament the ‘day of the Lord’ tells of the Final Judgement and the World to Come. This extends to the meaning of the first and second comings of Jesus The Christ. Either way all the references – Old and New Testaments, regarding this event appears to be closely tied-in with the coming of the Messiah to judge the world.

What Jesus Said

When questioned about the end days, Jesus responded MATTHEW 24: 3-13, 29-31:

‘As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved…’

29 “Immediately after the distress of those days

“‘the sun will be darkened,
    and the moon will not give its light;
the stars will fall from the sky,
    and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’

30 “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth[c] will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. 31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other…’

There is one thing I do know, and one person we have hope in – King Jesus. While all of this chaos continues around us, we have hope in the knowledge that God’s Will and His order of doing things are sovereign and when all is said and done…well we’ve all read the end of the book – right?

“They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because He is Lord of lords and King of kings–and with Him will be His called, chosen and faithful followers.” Revelation 17:14

Incredibly, the words “Fear not” appear 365 times in the Bible.

From Genesis to Revelation, God’s reassurance sees man through times of alarm, the unknown and the supernatural. When the angel of God called to Hagar from out of heaven the first words were ‘What ails you?’ The second Fear not.’

Therefore, man’s initial reaction to change or the unknown would appear to have a pattern – one of fear and trepidation.

Good Tidings!

When the angel Gabriel appeared unto Mary, his first words were “Fear not, Mary…”  (Luke 1:30). In the fields the shepherds were afraid whenever the multitude of angels appeared in the sky. Luke 2:10 tells us,

“And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.”

Also, in Matthew 1:20, the angel of the LORD appeared in a dream to Joseph saying,

“…fear not to take unto thee Mary they wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.”

Time and time again, God reassures us in the midst of that which we don’t fully understand. He sends messenger angels, signs and wonders in various forms – in other words God goes to great lengths to encourage us and reassure us. Therefore our unfounded anticipation that something bad is about to happen, is a falsehood. In fact, the complete opposite is true. God is in control and He brings a message of hope for the whole of humanity. It is embodied in a little baby.

Mary and Joseph were not the first to encounter God this way. A few months prior, Zacharias was told by an angel that his prayer had been heard and that his aging wife, Elisabeth (Mary’s cousin) would bear him a son. His name would be John. This baby would grow-up to become John The Baptist.

When Jesus first approached James and John on the shores of Galilee, the first words He uttered were, “Fear not.:” Time after time, Jesus used this phrase to reassure His followers and others.

At these uncertain times, listen to what God’s word is saying to you. If you are anxious or afraid about anything, remember what God says with these two powerful words. I believe they are linked to the most powerful moment in history – the time when God dwelt among us John 1:14…

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

What can be learn?


What can we learn from the Ancient Biblical Wedding? Marriage in ancient biblical times was very different to nowadays and there is a lot we can learn. Nowadays it is all about the bride and groom, whereas in ancient times it was all about negotiations.  From Old Testament times up until the Middle Ages, as a rule, fathers arranged matches between families.


What can we Learn from the Ancient Biblical Wedding?

In an ancient Jewish wedding, a dowry – or bride price – would have been paid to the father of the bride-to-be following negotiations. If the father of the bride had died, close family members such as a brother and/or mother would step-in. This dowry was called the ‘mohar.’ This was not necessarily a cash deal either. Sometimes it was paid in kind, or in service.

Jacob’s seven-year service for the hand of Rachel comes to mind. Although for Jacob it turned into a fourteen-year stint because of Laban’s deceit! (Genesis 29:18-30)

Genesis also describes the story of Abraham’s servant who sought a union between Isaac (Abraham’s son) and Rebekah.  It tells us in Genesis 24:53,

“Then the servant brought out gold and silver jewelry and articles of clothing and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts to her brother and to her mother.”

The gold and silver jewelry and clothing were Rebekah’s ‘mattan’ – her gifts from the groom. The additional gifts to her brother and mother, were called the ‘mohar.’ Chiefly because Abraham was an extremely wealthy man at the stage. The entire process is portrayed perfectly in this chapter. In these ancient of days, marriage was not really about two individuals but about the agreement between two families.

As well as the mattan from the groom, and the portion of the mohar from her father; the daughter could expect a field or other property as well as female slaves. This additional property could only occur if the father was wealthy.


Let’s now skip to the New Testament. Over the years Mary and Joseph have been portrayed as somehow ‘not married,’ when Mary conceived of the Holy Spirit. It has been interpreted that they were only engaged – as in a modern time concept. However, right up until the Middle Ages, marriage consisted of two ceremonies within the Jewish communities. That meant two celebrations with an interval in-between.

The betrothal/engagement or ‘erusin’ meant that the woman was in fact legally married. In ancient times she remained in her father’s house for a about a year. She could not belong or have relations with another man unless she was divorced from her betrothed. In Matthew 1:19 we read,

 “Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.”

Therefore, we know that the first ceremony, the betrothal, between Joseph and Mary had taken place, From that moment, their relationship could only be broken by a divorce. It is important to note that although the wedding ceremony had not yet taken place, Joseph is referred to as her husband.


The second ceremony called the ‘nissuin’ was a colorful procession that would lead the woman from her father’s house to the house of the groom. A marriage ceremony would take place and as would the consummation of the marriage.

In these ancient times, the betrothal was considered more important than the wedding. This was because the marriage was based upon the purchase of the woman. Again, looking at the scenario of Joseph and Mary we can read in Matthew 1 verse 24,

“When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.”

Also, it is important to note that prior to ‘taking Mary home’ or the wedding taking place, Joseph is referred to as her husband.

What did we learn?

When you study the scriptures, do you tend to read them at face value? Set against modern traditions? Would it not be more interesting to read the scriptures with the Hebraic roots in mind?

If we look at the Word, for instance, regarding marriage and weddings with what it meant to the Jewish people in those days, it sheds a whole new light on God’s Word. Weddings and wedding banquets occur a lot in the scriptures. Jesus said this,

The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.” Matthew 22:2.

Therefore, let us delve deeper into the meaning of the Word of God. Look up the scriptures? Embrace the Hebraic roots and what it meant to His people and ask yourself, what is God really trying to show me here, through His Word?

And remember in Revelation 19:7 it is written,

“Let us rejoice and be glad and give Him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and His bride has made herself ready.”
